URGENT: Fine Gael needs to hear from a lot more pro-life people

The Postcard to Politicians campaign is going well but it’s clear that Fine Gael needs to hear from a lot more pro-life people so that enough pressure is brought to bear on the leadership within Fine Gael. The situation is very serious at present and there is a real danger that abortion legislation could become a reality if those who oppose it do not speak up.
During the recent Dáil debate on abortion the Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly strongly implied that the Government is committed to introducing some form of abortion legislation in the very near future. To read more details about the Minister's speech and the current situation, you can view our new briefing document here

Before the last General Election, Fine Gael gave a strong pro-life commitment.  We must now hold them to that.  Please order postcards free of charge to send to your local Fine Gael Oireachtas members. It is vital that politicians hear from constituents at this time.

You can view a sample of the Postcards here

United States: Number of people describing themselves as 'pro-choice' hits an all time low

As the United States comes to grips with revelations that some abortion clinics are promoting sex selective abortions, Gallup, one of the main opinion polling  companies in the US has released a pollshowing the number of Americans supporting abortion has hit an all time low.
41% of Americans now describe themselves as “pro-choice”.  This is a drop of six percentage points over the last twelve months.

This is crucial news in an election year where government support for abortion provider Planned Parenthood is a major issue. The decline in support for abortion was seen across the political divide and it is clear that more and more people are questioning abortion and the negative effects it has on women.

New CSO data proves Ireland, without abortion far safer for pregnant women

The Central Statistics Office has just released its Report on Vital Statistics for 2009.

Amongst other things the report deals with the level of maternal deaths in Ireland and how the rate here compares with the UK.

For the latest available year (2009), Ireland’s maternal mortality rate is less than half that of England and Wales and half that of Scotland.

Pro-choice advocates often argue that abortion is necessary to safeguard women's lives. However, England and Wales has one of the most liberal abortion regimes in the world and the maternal mortality rate there is more than twice that of women in Ireland.

The figures once again prove the fact that Ireland, without abortion is one of the safest countries in the world for women in pregnancy. Let's keep it that way.

Breakthrough presentation on unborn human life 'Conception to brith - visualised'

Every so often a breakthrough occurs in imaging technology offering us a new way to see the development of human life in the womb from conception to birth. Each of these leaps forward in imaging technology has kicked off a paradigm shift in the way we visualise and understand unborn human life.

The latest of these breakthrough imaging moments is Alexander Tsiaras’s “Conception to birth – visualised”. This video combines a dazzling range of state-of-the-art medical scanning technologies, woven into a developmental narrative telling the story of the origin of a human life from fertilisation to birth, made universally available by being posted as a Youtube. Tsiara’s commentary, given from a scientific and mathematical perspective, rings with his wonder at the wonder he is presenting. The image of the little heart beating is unforgettable.

Joe McCarroll of the Pro Life Campaign says "With this Youtube, the dialogue of the pro-life community with the online generation enters a new phase.”

Hollywood Actor Christian Bale assaulted by Chinese security guards as he attempted to visit human rights lawyer Chen Guangcheng

CNN reports that actor Christian Bale was yesterday stopped from visiting Chen Guangcheng by Chinese security. Chen Guangcheng is a Chinese lawyer and human rights activist who has repeatedly brought international attention to the coercive population control policies arising from the Chinese One Child Policy. These human rights abuses include forced abortions and forced sterilisations.
He is under house arrest in China for some years. Hopefully this incident will bring more worldwide attention to Chen Guangcheng's plight.

Academy of Medical Royal Colleges review says some women suffer mental health problems after abortion

The Review on Induced Abortion and MentalHealth issued earlier this month by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges came to some controversial conclusions but also stated that women in certain categories are more likely to suffer mental health problems after an abortion.

The most revealing feature of the review is the fact that there is no mental health benefit to women from abortion. At a single stroke this cuts the ground from under the medical rationale for the most used reason for availing of abortion under Britain’s legislation. We already know abortion is never in the best interests of the unborn child. Now we know for a fact it is not in the best interests of the mother either.

The way the Review was presented helped create the false impression that whether a woman opted for an abortion or continued with the pregnancy it posed the same risk to her mental health. This is not the case.

Elements of the Review have been criticised by Dr. Priscilla Coleman MD, author of Abortion and mental health, a study published in September of this year which comprised a meta-analysis of 22 studies, examining 877,000 pregnancies.  Dr. Patricia Casey, Professor of Psychiatry at University College Dublin has also commented on the Review stating that it acknowledges that "there are certain groups who are likely to develop mental healthproblems following abortion. This is in keeping with some of the most up-to-date peer-reviewed findings showing the negative effects of abortion for some women."
